Hotels

The Penny Farthing Hotel

296-298 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1AH, UK – 01442 872828

Good rooms, comfortable beds, nothing flash but good. Breakfast: excellent

The Penny Farthing hotel is highly recommended. The rooms were clean, three staff was fantastic and helpful, and breakfast was great.

Premier Inn Hemel Hempstead West

A41 Service Area, Bourne End, Hemel Hempstead HP1 2SB, UK – 0871 527 8516

Directions given made it easy to get too. Rooms to usual standard, clean and plenty of space for all of us. Tea stuff lacked for number of us in room even after informing for additional days but not a problem, just asked at reception and staff so helpful. Breakfast / restaurant smallest i have been too, so busy at times. Dinner was lovely, breakfast edible but best on day 3, not enough Staff to cover a busy session (replenishing of food, drink and order service) all done by 1 member of staff. Although Staff right throughout our stay very nice, very helpful and always smiling. Deserved recognition for their effort. Cannot complain for duration of stay.

Lovely staff, great service and breakfast was cooked fresh, the rooms are excellent as usual. All facilities were clean and well maintained. The Location was ideal for our visit to Harry Potter Studios and also close to the train station for our trip in to the city. We'll certainly visit again! Thanks

The Watermill Hotel

London Rd, Bourne End, Hemel Hempstead HP1 2RJ, UK – 01442 349955

Attended a staff conference, staff at hotel friendly and helpful. A wonderful location and environment.

Nice staff, decent breakfast, functional room and free WiFi. The room we had worked. The bed was firm, clean sheets as you'd expect and the bathroom did its job. However, everything is just a little tired and dated. The decor is in need of updating and the plastic sink is very crazed and shabby. A shower in the bath is adequate but a plastic shower curtain is not really what you expect from a hotel in 2018. One of the biggest pluses was the free WiFi. Not quite fibre speed at about 17mbs but it was consistent and overall much better than most other hotels we'd stayed in. All in all, deserving of its three star status.

Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

Alford Arms

Frithsden, Hemel Hempstead HP1 3DD, UK – 01442 864480

This is a lovely pub with friendly staff, a warm atmosphere and great food. I recently became vegan and was delighted to see they have a vegan menu on weekdays. At the weekend they don’t have the vegan menu but were very accomodating and altered a vegetarian dish for me. It was delicious. I would recommend it.

Lovely country pub. Food is hearty. Outside seating for sunny days. Car park is tiny so difficult on busy days.

The Old Mill

London Rd, Berkhamsted HP4 2NB, UK – 01442 879590

Just had Easter Sunday lunch here. They were busy, busy, busy but all the staff were working cheerfully together and coping extremely well. The lamb roast was I think the best I have tasted, soft and flavoursome. Well done team Old Mill

Cute, lovely rear outdoor area with waterfall. Lovely by the river too. Slightly pricey on drinks, including soft and hot drinks. Very cosey and family/calm vibe.

The Highwayman

262 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1AQ, UK – 01442 285480

Booked a table online for a birthday celebration, which was very useful as it was a suprise. Very nice relaxed place, stuff were attentive and pleasant. The service was a little bit slow, but we were a table of 12 on a busy Sunday so not as bad as it could have been. The food was very well presented, roast dinners where a good size, and they accommodated for a vegetarian roast dinner (all the best bits). Comments form the meat eaters said they didn't need the extra 'mini Shepard pie' with the lamb dish.. and the beef 'mini cottage pie' didn't get served but wasn't needed anyway, there was plenty of food. Cocktails very very nice.. and different from the normal things you would expect. not to mention the 241 offer we took full advantage of. Would recommend, and defiantly go again.

We had a wonderful evening here last night celebrating my birthday. The atmosphere was great, the food amazing and we were warmly served by the delightful Thea who was friendly, polite and professional throughout. I would have awarded 5 stars were it not for the fact that half our party wanted to end the night with cheese and biscuits and we were told they had sold out! On a Saturday night! Didn't spoil the night though and will definitely be back. The fillet steak was incredible

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!

Stayed one night. Really lovely people and beautiful place :)

Perfect for what I needed arriving late at night and leaving early morning- The owners were contactable by mobile so could help me out with directions. Basic functional facilities, but can't really go wrong for £5! Definitely coming back- next time I will make use of the fire pits!
