The Rising Sun Pub

George St, Berkhamsted HP4 2EG, UK – 01442 864913

Not just an award winning place, this canal-side pub in Berkhamsted is a no thrills proper pub where you get a good choice of ciders and real ales. They have beer and cider festivals which get very busy. Dogs are welcome and it's used by walkers, cyclists and narrowboaters. The staff are friendly and the setting perfect. Do go. You shan't regret it

Great staff, good food, beautiful location and a really fun quiz.

Golden Eagle Pub

The Golden Eagle, 3PW, Ashley Green Rd, Chesham HP5 3PW, UK

Quality Pub. Great staff. Best pub in Bucks.

Lovely rural location backing onto fields and the bar staff are friendly too. A bonus for the Berkhamsted area, is that the prices are not ruinous, either. A much underrated pub.

The Boat

Gravel Path, Berkhamsted HP4 2EF, UK – 01442 877152

It's a lovely venue when the sun is out. But the speed of service is slow. Fine if you have a spare 2 hour lunch break, but not the place to go in a rush.

Great location, great food, breathing selection of drinks.

Zaza

21-23 Lower Kings Rd, Berkhamsted HP4 2AB, UK – 01442 767055

Pictures are of the goats cheese salad and the lamb shank with mash potato (both are really nice 😊). My son took me he here for lunch and it was rather nice. Nice selection of menu and drinks. Very nice and attentive staff , theirs and upstairs and a down stairs.

We had a lovely evening here. Food and service were both excellent and there is a really good, cosy atmosphere. We sat upstairs which is our preferred area. It was a Saturday night and very busy but staff were calm and very efficient. Highly recommend.

Bill's Berkhamsted Restaurant

163-165 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 3HB, UK – 01442 862560

Good food and great service. Sightly on the expensive side but not poor value. Think we got lucky getting a walk-in table when we did so probably advisable to book.

Hats off to the chef and staff at Bills in Berko for last night! Burgers at the weekend are a treat and we were so looking forward to it and were not disappointed! We had burger and fries with the chocolate bomb was light, crunchy, salty, sweet and perfect to share. We were asked how we liked them cooked and they came a perfect medium! Sliiightly pink and so juicy! Great crunch with the fresh salad and the sauce is great! We were just saying that it was the best burger We’ve had, not only in bills but in Berko and the staff were courteous and helpful as always! Thank you! (Sat 28th April)

Porters Restaurant and Bar

Unit 3, 300 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1ZZ, UK – 01442 876666

We had a wonderful lunch here, excellent food, very friendly staff. A very modern on trend restaurant.

Wonderful, friendly and thoughtful staff. Food is good but not 5 star. Atmosphere lovely and decor great.

Chinese Restaurants serving the Northchurch area

Lots Of Rice

1 Holliday St, Berkhamsted HP4 2EE, UK – 01442 865033

Great food. Ordered by telephone as usual so no waiting when I pick up food. Parking outside.

I do like the manic nature of this take-away, the rattle of the woks. Food is good and value for money.

Indian Restaurants and takeaways in or near Northchurch

The Fat Buddha

378 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1HU, UK – 01442 879995

A good selection of Indian food, which is tasty, well presented and cooked to a good standard. Service is friendly and efficient. The decor is contemporary, as are the tunes! There is also a nice bar area at the front of the restaurant where you can have a drink while waiting for a table if you haven't booked. The tables in dining area are tightly packed in and the acoustics can make it very noisy, which detracts from an otherwise good restaurant. We do eat here fairly often, but tend to avoid the busier nights because of the noise.

A very smart and contemporary restaurant with friendly and attentive staff; clearly very popular by the amount of people dinning. My meal was very enjoyable but my wife's a was overcooked and dry. My overriding experience was that is was too noisy and I struggled to communicate over the table with the other guests in our group, I also felt it was a bit expensive, despite the pleasant surrounding and genrally good food. Overall I wouldn't be in a rush to go back, I think you could eat just as well elsewhere for less and have a better dining experience.

Curry Garden

29 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 2BX, UK – 01442 877867

I'm sure this won't be a surprise to anyone who has been before, but The Curry Garden is the go to place for a curry in Berko. The staff are brilliant, and recognise repeat visitors. They're friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, great for someone like me who likes to try new things. The restaurant it's self is very nicely presented, though tall people will need to duck when going through some of the door ways given the buildings age. The menu has a nice range of different things and me and my wife still find new things to try after a number of visits down the years. Price wise it is certainly well priced, and Tuesday evening is an absolute bargain for the fixed price menu option. In fact I'm surprised it isn't busier on a Tuesday night. Overall, great food in a nice setting served by great people. I recommend The Curry Garden to all my friends and it is our go to place when we want to eat out.

Initial welcome not particularly warm. Improved with time maybe just that particular waiter? Chicken quality average have had much better in Hemel Hempstead restaurants. Felt chicken was of cheaper quality with high water infusion. Whole experience average have certainly experienced worse but generally better.

Italian Pasta and Pizza Restaurants

ASK Italian

247-249 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1AB, UK – 01442 940357

Food excellent. Staff v friendly. Ambiance characterless and had an unwelcoming feel - like a canteen. Rubbish in extraction unit area outside - probably why we weren't invited to sit by the window (which one would expect to entice others in). Tables outside not cleaned (should be stacked unless expected to be used) and the wall by our table was splashed with coke/coffee. Toilets were cold and tired.

Good Italian restaurant with a variety of classic and modern dishes. The ravioli was delicious. The Eaton mess with a twist was so good! The waitress was very helpful and friendly. Good place to go for a catch up with friends.

Carluccio's

196 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 3BA, UK – 01442 877807

Nice restaurant with a lovely atmosphere. There is a good varied menu here and friendly staff. The food in my opinion was just OK, I was expecting something with a little more of a wow factor for my money. Is was good food but without much depth.

We had a wonderful "Thanksgiving Meal" here last November. Pleasant staff, great ambience, and some really interesting menu items.

Pizza Express

350 High Street, Berkhamsted HP4 1HT, UK – 01442 879966

Very lovely staff, great food, catered very well for a party of 14 people and we were all highly impressed! Food was lovely and staff always at hand to make sure we were all having a great time. Thank you very much. By far the best Pizza express I have been too

Good service, standard pizza express food, okay setting.

Vegetarian or Vegan Restaurants

Olive Tree Restaurant

270 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1AQ, UK – 01442 876726

Just had a delicious lunch. Proper Greek food and great ambiance. Good for groups or even grabbing a quick lunch on your own. Yummy Gyros!

Nice food. It's a good restaurant for a quick bite and longer meal. Service can be quick if you're in a rush. I had the chicken wrap and a coffee. Both were very nice.

Giggling Squid

296-298 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1AH, UK – 01442 866087

Didn't know what expect when visiting the giggling squid but happy to say we had a great meal. The setting of the restaurant is nice and is definitely different from your usual Thai. At lunch they do a Thai tapas, but we came for an early dinner and the food we had was delicious. The starters were very tasty. The squid was coated it a very light batter, the dumplings were very spicy but could have had more and the chicken satay were just not dry. The mains were just as good! The prawns on the pad Thai were big and chunky and the beef was tender and juicy. Definitely will be going back and would recommend. Probably the best Thai in the area.

Wonderfully exotic foods with scintillating flavours and spices. Make sure to try the adventurous spicy chocolate cake with a scoop of ice cream to make your taste buds pop.

The Highwayman

262 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 1AQ, UK – 01442 285480

Booked a table online for a birthday celebration, which was very useful as it was a suprise. Very nice relaxed place, stuff were attentive and pleasant. The service was a little bit slow, but we were a table of 12 on a busy Sunday so not as bad as it could have been. The food was very well presented, roast dinners where a good size, and they accommodated for a vegetarian roast dinner (all the best bits). Comments form the meat eaters said they didn't need the extra 'mini Shepard pie' with the lamb dish.. and the beef 'mini cottage pie' didn't get served but wasn't needed anyway, there was plenty of food. Cocktails very very nice.. and different from the normal things you would expect. not to mention the 241 offer we took full advantage of. Would recommend, and defiantly go again.

We had a wonderful evening here last night celebrating my birthday. The atmosphere was great, the food amazing and we were warmly served by the delightful Thea who was friendly, polite and professional throughout. I would have awarded 5 stars were it not for the fact that half our party wanted to end the night with cheese and biscuits and we were told they had sold out! On a Saturday night! Didn't spoil the night though and will definitely be back. The fillet steak was incredible

Wine Bars and Cocktail Bars

The Gatsby

97 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 2DG, UK – 01442 870403

Superb Art Deco restaurant. Great jazz pianist when we visited. Food was exceptional. Staff very friendly. Prices good for the quality of the meal. A sophisticated 30’s vibe - unusual outside of London. Highly recommended.

Best food in the area. 3 course set lunch including a glass of wine for £21. Great value and lovely flavours. And always different. Lovely art deco 1930s building. Perfect!

The Kings Arms

The Kings Arms Hotel, 147 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 3HL, UK – 01442 866595

Lovely, spacious pub. I was there with a group of friends for a late breakfast. The food was excellent and the prices reasonable. Lots of young families with babies there at the same time, but it never got crowded or noisy. Friendly staff, too. Highly recommended.

Had a great Sunday roast (beef) here after a walk. Good portion size and lots of flavour. Would have been perfect if the roast potatoes were a little crunchier. Horseradish sauce had a proper kick to it, just how I like it. It ain't horseradish sauce if I'm not screwing my face up.
