Walking, Hiking and Outdoor Shops

The Complete Outdoors

London Rd, Bourne End, Hemel Hempstead HP1 2RS, UK – 01442 873133

Really friendly and helpful staff. I work for a local council contractor and was having difficulty getting my company credit card unlocked for a purchase, after about 30 mins of waiting the staff member was willing to let me drive off and return to pay later! This was the first time I had ever used this shop yet they put their trust in me 100% unheard of in this day and age. If I ever have any camping needs this is the place I would go. 10 out 10 😁

I only found out about Complete Outdoors luckily on a search on google maps and I'm really glad I did. I wanted a shop that know's it's stuff and has well trained staff which is what I found. David there was AMAZING.. I needed some hiking boots and insoles for this year and next and he really helped guide me through the options, what they do and whats best for the support of my foot, legs and knees. I'm really glad I found this shop and will be popping back regularly!

Mountain Warehouse Berkhamsted

198 High St, Berkhamsted HP4 3AP, UK – 01442 877786

Very small shop. Used to visiting much larger premises with more selection. They do say they can get stuff ordered in for next day, but if I want to order I'll do that from the comfort of my own sofa!

Good service,

Ronnie Sunshines

4 Canalside, Northbridge Road, Berkhamsted HP4 1EG, UK – 01442 872829

Great service received on the purchase of my first PCP rifle. Friendly advice and an indoor shooting range to try out your intended purchase. Highly recommend this shop for all your air rifle needs.

Fabulous shop with experienced, knowledgeable staff and a wide range of shooting and related equipment. Helped me out when trigger adjustment went a bit wrong and my rifle stopped firing. Best place in Herts for all your shooting needs.

Camping and Caravaning

Norcott Campsite - Camping In The Orchard

Dudswell Ln, Berkhamsted HP4 1LE, UK – 07788 151022

If you enjoy proper wild camping like us then this is a great little campsite. Pros- Car park is right next to the camping area, fire pits are provided, wood to burn is easily found and the campsite is located in a lovely area for just relaxing by the tent or going on walks. Toilets are also available. Cons- the car park and camping area are both quite small so this can be a downer if it gets busy and you end up with noisey neighbours like we did on our second night. Although toilets are provided they are very old and basic with no lighting so make sure you take a torch in the dark and possibly your own toilet roll. Also drinking water was murky when coming out of the taps so we played it safe and stuck with bottled water. The campsite is located on the grounds of an old, huge house which outwardly looks quite spooky and there are a few stone Dragon features around which gives the place a lot of character which we loved! If you're happy with the basics then this could be the place for you however if you like to be located where all the action is and facilities are 5* then this probably isn't the place for you. We however will definitely be returning.

Snake bites

Most snake bites in the UK are not serious. But it's important to get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if:

  • you think you, or someone else, has been bitten by a snake

Find your nearest A&E

Information:

If you're not in the UK when you are bitten by a snake, contact the emergency medical services in the country you're in.

Get foreign travel advice on GOV.UK

What to do while you're waiting for help

Do

  • stay calm, most snake bites in the UK are not serious and can be treated

  • keep the part of your body that was bitten as still as you can

  • lie in the recovery position if you can

  • take paracetamol for any pain

  • try to remember the colour and pattern of the snake to tell the doctor

  • take off any jewellery and loosen clothes near the bite, in case it swells

Don’t

  • do not go near the snake, or try to catch or kill it

  • do not try to suck or cut the poison (venom) out of the bite

  • do not tie anything tightly round the part of the body where the bite is

  • do not take aspirin or ibuprofen, as they can make bleeding worse

What happens at the hospital

You will usually need to stay in hospital for at least 24 hours if you have been bitten by a snake.

The bite will be cleaned and bandaged. You may be given an injection to help protect you from tetanus.

If you were bitten by a poisonous (venomous) snake you will be treated with a medicine to fight the venom. This is given through a thin tube into a vein, called a drip.

Types of UK snake

Only 3 types of snake are found in the wild in the UK.

The adder is the only venomous snake, but you should get all snake bites checked as soon as possible.

Telling the doctors the colour and pattern of the snake that bit you could help them treat it.
